Indians lead White Sox, 1-0, through three innings.
CLEVELAND, Ohio -- The White Sox led the Indians, 1-0, Sunday afternoon at Progressive Field.
Chicago righty Edwin Jackson allowed two hits. He is 8-1 in his career against the Indians.
Tribe righty Justin Masterson gave up two hits -- both to Juan Pierre -- and the one run.
Pesky Pierre led off the game by yanking a 2-1 pitch past diving first baseman Matt LaPorta down the line. The ball did not get to the wall, but Pierre managed a relatively stress-free double. Pierre entered with a .322 slugging percentage.
White Sox manager Ozzie Guillen, figuring runs would be at a premium given the opposing pitcher's success, ordered a sacrifice bunt from Alexei Ramirez. On his second attempt, Ramirez succeeded.
Paul Konerko, Chicago's most dangerous hitter, stepped in. Konerko drove in the run with a grounder to shortstop Asdrubal Cabrera, who was playing deep.
In the bottom of the first, Ezequiel Carrera led off with a six-pitch walk. With Michael Brantley in a 1-0 count, Carrera got caught leaning by Jackson. First baseman Paul Konerko applied the swipe tag.
After Brantley flied out, Asdrubal Cabrera doubled over first base. Travis Hafner, who entered hitting .436 with runners in scoring position, chopped to third.
Indians third baseman Lonnie Chisenhall singled with two outs in the second. Slumping Matt LaPorta, given a 2-0 pitch with which to work, grounded to Jackson.
Former Indians standout Omar Vizquel, starting at second base and batting ninth for the White Sox, received a loud ovation when he came to the plate in the third.
The Indians put a runner, Travis Buck, at second with one out in the third. But Brantley and Asdrubal Cabrera grounded to second.
