Rooting out knives

A GARDEN designed to reflect the horrors of knife crime is to be replicated at Hull KR's ground.

The east Hull rugby club hopes the move will help raise awareness of the issue of knife crime.

The original garden was produced by staff at HMP Everthorpe prison, with inmates getting involved.

The harsh realities of knife crime are represented at one side of the garden by a dead tree, which represents a life cut short through knife crime, as well as wall art and knives embedded in glass resin pavers.

The other side of the garden is more colourful, featuring a healthy tree and sculpture, which represents a family.

Dr Neil Pease, Hull KR's strategic development director, said: "We're pleased to be supporting this project.

"We hope by relocating the garden to Craven Park we can make it more accessible to a larger number of people within the local community."

As part of the Save A Life Drop The Knife garden, the team from the East Yorkshire prison are also going to be at the Tatton Park Flower Show in Cheshire in July.

In a bid to raise funds, Glen Jackson, his son Billy and prison colleagues Craig Tamminen and Lee Scholes will be taking part in a 46-hour challenge.

From tomorrow, in two days, they will:

Kayak the full length of Windermere – a distance of ten-and-a-half miles.

Climb Scafell Pike – 978 metres.

Cycle 135 miles from Whitehaven in the Lake District to Sunderland.

Glen Jackson, prison officer instructor, said: "I'm looking forward to it, though it's going to be hard work.

"I think I'm least looking forward to the cycle ride.

"I would like to thank the Hull and District Canoe club for lending us their equipment, Ray Young for being back-up support and the Goodwin Trust for donating transport.

"The funds we raise will go towards the project development.

"We are looking to replicate the garden on the Craven Park site and for it to become a pilot scheme for a community initiative highlighting to young people the dangers of carrying knives."
