Fishing report: A bit windy for fishing on Lake Erie

Sunny weekend weather will be perfect for golf, but it will be a bit windy for fishing on Lake Erie. Yellow perch fishing had been good all along the Ohio shoreline of Lake Erie, and walleye were being caught off Vermilion, Lorain and Ashtabula. It’s the dog days of summer on inland lakes, with catfish biting all around the area, but walleye, bass and crappie fishing are just fair to good.

Cleveland area

Windy weather and big waves have slowed the fishing around Cleveland, where yellow perch had been biting in 46 to 48 feet of water and walleye were being caught close to shore from the Rocky River to Avon Lake. Some perch were also being caught around the Cleveland Crib.

Central Lake Erie

Yellow perch fishing has been good from Huron to Avon Lake in 34 to 41 feet of water on emerald shiner minnows worked along the bottom.

West of Cleveland, walleye fishing has been best around the weather buoy on the Ohio-Ontario line north of Vermilion, and inside the Lorain Sand Bar west of Lorain. Walleye fishermen have been trolling minnow-style plugs and spinner rigs in green and chartreuse tipped with a nightcrawler.

East of Cleveland, perch fishing has been best in 48 to 52 feet of water around the hump northwest of Fairport Harbor and in 62 to 65 feet of water northeast of Conneaut. Walleye fishing is still good 12 to 16 miles northeast of Ashtabula and northwest of Conneaut.

Smallmouth bass fishing is fair in 15 to 25 feet of water around drop-offs and rock piles adjacent to major harbors. Most bass anglers are heading to the reefs adjacent to deep water around Pelee Island in Ontario waters.

Inland lakes, reservoirs

The catfish bite has been very good all around the area, but especially at Mosquito Reservoir, where channel and flathead catfish are being caught. Top local catfish waters also include Pymatuning, West Branch and Berlin lakes. The Muskingum Watershed Conservancy District lakes, including Tappan, Clendening and Piedmont, offer good catfish success. Catfish are taking processed catfish baits, cut bait, shrimp or nightcrawlers along near-shore flats early and late in the day and after dark.

Largemouth bass fishing has been fair, with anglers casting to outside edges of weed beds, drop-offs and points with plastic worms, jigs and trailers and deep-diving plugs. Topwater lures are working very early and late in the day, and after dark. Top local bass lakes include Nimisila, Wingfoot and Pymatuning. The Portage Lakes will be crowded with a bass tournament Saturday.

Some walleye are being caught at Mosquito and Pymatuning, with the causeways at both lakes giving up some nice crappie on small jigs tipped with minnows and suspended under a float.

Western Lake Erie

Walleye fishing lately has been fair, with fish being caught around the Niagara Reef complex, Gull Shoal and Kelleys Island Shoal. Yellow perch fishing has been good around Green and Ballast islands, southeast of Kelleys Island and between Kelleys Island and the Marblehead Peninsula.
