OSU's Jake Stoneburner shares fans' relief after dodging Toledo's threat: Buckeye Leaves

COLUMBUS, Ohio -- News, notes and leftover tidbits about the Buckeyes and the Big Ten.

Imagine if Ohio State had lost to an in-state school for the first time since 1921 on Saturday.

"That's not good," tight end Jake Stoneburner said. "I wouldn't want to be part of that. Thankfully it didn't happen. [Toledo] is a great team and they played their hearts out, and we give them the utmost respect, but we can't allow that to happen in Ohio Stadium." ...

Running back Carlos Hyde, averaging 84.5 rushing yards per game, is tied for sixth in the Big Ten and 51st in the nation. ...

It seems as if John Simon needs to chill out a bit, just enough to stay on the field. Coach Luke Fickell said of the cramps that forced Simon to the locker room Saturday, "emotionally sometimes things happen and he starts to cramp up a little bit. We've got to do a better job, and he's got to do a better job of making sure they get that under control because we need him out there."

Said Simon: "You get emotional for these games and sometimes when it's hot outside like it was, things like that happen." ...

Chris Fields' 69-yard punt return for a touchdown Saturday was one of 14 punt return scores in major college football through the first two weeks. ... With 119 yards, freshman Devin Smith leads the Buckeyes and ranks 10th in the Big Ten in receiving. Stoneburner is 15th with 93 yards and Verlon Reed is 16th with 89 yards. ...

Offensive tackle J.B. Shugarts said he couldn't watch when the defense held Toledo to win the game. "I didn't watch the last three plays," Shugarts said. "I was sitting on the bench with my head down. I kept my eyes closed and listened to the crowd." ...

Quarterback Joe Bauserman is 35th in the nation in passing efficiency. He ranked third after the first week of the season. ... Andrew Sweat leads the Buckeyes with 5.5 tackles per game, which only ties him for 36th in the conference. ... Based on yardage, Ohio State's defense is second in the Big Ten and 10th in the country. Offensively, the Buckeyes are sixth in the Big Ten and 53rd in the country.

The NCAA has decided that it will not officially count the stats from Michigan's season-opener against Western Michigan called because of bad weather in the third quarter. The win counts, and the Big Ten will count the stats, but for NCAA stat purposes, it didn't happen. So right now, Michigan quarterback Denard Robinson leads the nation in total offense per game, having gained 446 yards in his one game that counts, Saturday's win over Notre Dame. ...

Nebraska quarterback Taylor Martinez ranks second in the conference and 14th in the nation with 318 total yards per game. Just in rushing yards, Martinez does lead the Big Ten and ranks third in the nation with 150.5 per game. ...

The Big Ten running backs with the most yards so far are Iowa's Marcus Coker and Wisconsin's Montee Ball, who are tied with 181 yards. ...

After holding Florida Atlantic to just 48 yards and one first down Saturday, Michigan State is the No. 4 defense in the nation in fewest yards allowed. ... Wisconsin quarterback Russell Wilson is starting to enter the very early-season Heisman discussion after the Badgers' 2-0 start, as they're outscoring opponents, 86-17. Wilson leads the conference with 444 passing yards and a 79.3 completion percentage. ...

The highest scoring team in the conference in Illinois, which ranks 19th in the country with 44.5 points per game. ... Nebraska is the only Big Ten team with a negative turnover margin. ... Minnesota coach Jerry Kill continues to improve at a hospital after suffering a seizure on the sideline near the end of the Golden Gophers' loss to New Mexico State.
