HULL'S Sea Shanty Festival will go ahead after pub landlords rallied round to keep the popular event alive.
Hull City Council had announced it was axing the event, also known as the Maritime Festival, after 21 years because of budget cuts.
But now, Ruscadors, The Minerva and Fruit have pulled together to stage a festival and there are already 10 acts set to perform at the festival on July 23 and 24.
The three pubs will be the venues and organisers are also seeking permission to use land near Humber Street as an open-air venue.
Ruscadors landlord Peter Smith said: "We want to keep this festival going. It might not be on the grand scale of previous years, but we have ten acts lined up.
"But we really want to get businesses involved to sponsor the event.
"The festival generates a lot of interest in the city and people come from far and wide."
Phil Daly, who owns The Minerva, believes the festival is vital for business.
He said: "As soon as we heard the festival wasn't going ahead, we knew we had to keep it going.
"It seemed natural that we would take this on.
"There was a lot of disappointed people so we are trying our best to get it going again.
"We need events like this to bring in business and remind people we are here."
Mr Daly is also appealing for backing from other firms.
He said: "We need sponsors to produce the flyers and attract some of the big names from Holland.
"It is very promising, but we need extra backing to take it that bit further."
Musician Mick McGarry is helping attract acts.
He said: "This event is an integral part of Hull's heritage.
"It is a smaller event this year, but we are keeping it afloat.
"I am speaking to a lot of performers and there is a lot of interest in taking part."
Fruit manager Jake Jardine said: "Maritime is a big part of the city's culture.
"We feel we have to get involved.
"We are a little different to the pubs as an events venue, so we will be looking to host the evening performances."
Hull City Council's events team has offered support and expert advice with planning the event.
