Star 'honoured' to help dish out funny money

A HULL-born TV star has been signed up as the region's Red Nose Day Community Cash Champion.

The Mail is teaming up with Comic Relief to distribute a 50,000 pot to groups in Hull and East Riding.

Grants of between 500 and 1,000 are available to organisations helping to transform lives.

Liam Garrigan joined in a Tai Chi session at Lonsdale Community Centre, in west Hull, which received funding from Comic Relief last year.

The actor, who has appeared in a multitude of TV series, including Holby City and Blue Murder, as well as numerous plays in London West End, said it was an "honour" to become involved with the charity.

He said: "So much of the vital work being done to support vulnerable people in the UK is handled by small local groups in the heart of communities.

"That's why the Red Nose Day Community Cash fund is so important, because it gives grants to organisations who can make the money work really hard to improve lives right on their own doorstep.

"I had an awesome time practicing Tai Chi when I visited the Lonsdale Community Centre and seeing the positive impact the project is having on the lives of these young people was inspiring."

Lonsdale Community Centre, in Lonsdale Street, runs activities including a parent and toddler group, dance classes and a youth club.

Parent and toddler groups, equipment for youth groups, community festivals and befriending for older and isolated people are just some of the organisations that could benefit from the Red Nose Day Community Cash fund.

Groups have until noon on Friday, March 11, to apply for a grant.

Liam said: "This is a fantastic opportunity for local groups working hard to make a difference right here in Hull to get some much-needed cash,

"I would urge everyone to get your applications in without delay so that you don't miss out on the chance to get some vital funding."

The Two Ridings Community Foundation, an independent charity, will chair a specially formed grant allocation committee to decide which organisations are the most deserving.

Comic Relief is urging people to do something funny for money on Red Nose Day, which takes place on Friday, March 18. For fundraising ideas, visit www.rednoseday.com.
