Turning off street lights makes residents feel less safe

A trial energy-saving scheme to switch off street lights in a town could come to an end after residents said it made them feel less safe.

Rutland County Council's cabinet will hear tomorrow that a majority of residents of Oakham's Foxfield Way estate, where lights have been switched off between midnight and 5.30am, object to the trial continuing.

Aman Mehra, the council's strategic director for places, said: "Switching off street lights supports the council's strategic objective of tackling climate change.

"However, the results of public consultation in Oakham show that there has been an adverse impact on the council's objective of making people feel safer."

In Cottesmore, where a similar trial has been held, residents were in favour of the scheme continuing.

The cabinet will tomorrow to consider Mr Mehra's recommendation that the trial in Oakham ends – with the estate's street lights returning to dusk to dawn operation – and that the measure in the Wenton Close estate, Cottesmore, is made permanent.
