Hurricane forces Scallop Search change
Because of Hurricane Irene, Tampa Bay Watch rescheduled its Great Bay Scallop Search, originally set for Aug. 27. High winds churned Tampa Bay and made visibility low. Boat captains and volunteers now will meet at 9 a.m. Sept. 10 at the Fort De Soto boat ramp to conduct the search. Scallops are good indicators as to how clean the water is. The more scallops, the better the water quality. The all-time high in the scallop search is 674 is 2009. For information, go to www.tampabaywatch.org.

Blue crab traps, scallops to close
A few notable September saltwater fishing regulations to be aware of: Blue crab trap harvest season closes Sept. 20 in gulf waters 3 to 9 miles offshore. On Sept. 26, scallop season closes until July 1, 2012. Snook season is open, but only in the Atlantic. Snook remains close to harvesting in the gulf.
