GLENDALE, Ariz. —Third-string quarterbacks when the season began, John Skelton and Stephen McGee had lead parts in a Christmas night drama staged by NFL teams headed nowhere.
Jay Feely's 48-yard field goal inched over the crossbar with 5 seconds to play, giving Arizona a 27-26 victory over Dallas.
"Really, nothing's bigger than beating the Dallas Cowboys on Christmas Day right now," Cardinals rookie QB Skelton said. "Whiz (coach Ken Whisenhunt) was shaking my hand before the game and I said, 'We have one last gift to unwrap.' Sure enough, it took the last minute, but we got it."
Dallas rallied from 18 points down to take a 26-24 lead when Stephen McGee, in his first NFL game in place of Jon Kitna after the veteran left with a hip injury, threw 45 yards to Miles Austin for a touchdown with 1:46 to play. But David Buehler's extra point went wide left.
"I'm not feeling too good," Buehler said. "I feel bad for Stephen. … I think I just rushed it a little bit."
On the ensuing drive Skelton, on fourth and 15 from the Cardinals 19, threw 26 yards to fellow rookie Max Komar. Then the Cardinals slipped into range for Feely, a Tampa Jesuit graduate who had a 49-yarder earlier.
Titan doesn't know why he was benched
NASHVILLE — Titans tight end Bo Scaife said he doesn't know if talking about a possibly divided locker room got him benched.
Scaife played at Texas with Tennessee quarterback Vince Young, who was recently told to stay away from the team after an incident with coach Jeff Fisher. Last week, Scaife said he believed support in the locker room might be divided between Young and Fisher. Scaife, who had started 12 of the 13 games in which he played this season, was inactive for the next game.
"Coach makes all the decisions on the team," Scaife said.
"So if he felt that I needed to be inactive and that was the best decision for the team, then that's how he felt."
Fisher said the team needed players at other positions and he wanted more work for Jared Cook. (Craig Stevens started at tight end.) But he added he expects Scaife to be active today.
Assistant faints: Cardinals defensive backs coach Donnie Henderson fainted as he drove to the stadium, his car hitting a barricade. Henderson was not hurt and was described as coherent but was taken to a hospital.
Steelers: Rashard Mendenhall lost the extra yard he was incorrectly credited with last week, costing him a 100-yard game against the Jets. Mendenhall ran for 9 yards to the Jets 26 in the second quarter. But the chain crew began moving the yard markers. So an official placed the ball at the 25 and signaled a first down, and Mendenhall was credited with 10 yards. But the Elias Sports Bureau, the league's statistician, has taken away the yard and added one to a sack of Ben Roethlisberger on the following play.
