Diamond anniversary joy for childhood sweethearts

Childhood sweethearts Don and Mavis Palmer are celebrating their diamond wedding anniversary today.

The couple, who live in Enderby, met on a blind date organised by their friends when they were both 16.

Mrs Palmer, now 82, worked on a farm in Hinckley, where she is originally from, and Mr Palmer, also 82, would travel from the nearby village of Croft to visit her.

Mrs Palmer said it was Mr Palmer's "honesty and kindness" that made her realise he was the one.

Just a year after the couple married at Hinckley Baptist Church, Mr Palmer was posted to Japan.

They did not see each other for the next two and a half years but used to write to each other every day, said Mrs Palmer.

She said trust had been the key to their long and happy marriage.

Mr and Mrs Palmer have two daughters, Jane Dann, who lives in the Lake District, and Debbie Willock, who lives in Earl Shilton.

They also have five grandchildren and five great grandchildren. They celebrated their anniversary with a family party.
