Florida Gators football coach Steve Addazio to take Temple Owls' top job

GAINESVILLE — Florida offensive coordinator/offensive line coach Steve Addazio will be the new head coach at Temple, replacing Al Golden who was hired last week to take over at Miami.

Addazio, 51, will be introduced today at a news conference. He is expected to coach the Gators through the Jan. 1 Outback Bowl against Penn State.

"He's going to be a good head coach. He knows his stuff, man," Eagles rookie receiver Riley Cooper, who played at Florida and Clearwater Central Catholic, told the Philadelphia Daily News on Wednesday.

On Tuesday, orangebloods.com reported that Addazio had been hired to take over as the offensive line coach at Texas, but that option apparently was contingent on his status at Temple.

In five of his six seasons with the Gators, Addazio was the offensive line coach. He served as tight ends coach in his first season (2005) and was promoted to offensive coordinator in 2009. Addazio also has coached at Syracuse, Notre Dame and Indiana and has recruited the northeast extensively.

New Florida coach Will Muschamp has said there is a chance some current Gator assistant coaches might be retained, but there were no indications that Addazio would be asked to remain in his current position. Florida is ranked 80th in Division I-A in total offense, No. 47 in scoring offense.

"He got a lot of criticism for the offensive coordinating this year, which he didn't need or didn't deserve or whatnot," Cooper told the Daily News.

Temple athletic director Bill Bradshaw has not spoken publicly about the coaching search, and Addazio could not be reached for comment.

However, word seemed to get out to Gators players. Some sent well wishes via social media.

"Proud of Addazio! He got the head coaching job at Temple. Gonna miss ya coach," offensive guard and former St. Petersburg Catholic standout Jon Halapio wrote on Facebook.
