BOOK-lovers in an East Riding village have their library back after an extensive four-month refurbishment.
The library in North Ferriby was closed in December to undergo a transformation.
Despite the freezing weather, anyone wishing to borrow books had to get in line at a temporary mobile library van behind the Duke Of Cumberland pub.
The 85,000 revamp was needed because the library, built in the 1930s, needed a complete refit.
Darren Stevens, head of culture and information at East Riding Council, said said: "The refurbishment has brought this popular facility up-to-date and made it even more accessible.
"I am very pleased with the works, which will ensure the high-quality standard of service offered will continue for years to come."
Heating and lighting systems have been renewed with improvements to disabled access and the installation of new flooring. Other renovations included new shelves, library desk and windows.
Community and information officer Andrea Wake said: "Our refurbishment will provide more efficient heating and lighting.
"It will be better for the people who work there and for the people who use it.
"The library is well used by all ages – it's a busy little branch library."
As with many branch libraries, North Ferriby has a reference section as well as offering Internet access. One of the most anticipated changes was better facilities for disabled people.
As well as improved lighting and flooring, the work will include a new handrail and ramp at the front of the building for customers with mobility difficulties.
When the library was closed for the work to be done, North Ferriby Parish Councillor John Halmshaw said: "The parish council is very pleased with it. We want to see services kept in the village. It's important for villages to retain services like doctors and libraries because it's not always easy for people to go elsewhere.
"When we did the parish plan survey, one of the things we found out was how strongly people felt about the library."
The library is open from 10am to 5pm on Tuesdays, 2pm to 7pm on Thursdays and 10am to noon on Saturdays. Call 01482 632227 for details.
