Mum who slapped teacher in front of pupils pleads guilty to common assault

A MOTHER assaulted a teacher in front of a class of pupils.

Wendy Carney slapped Rexford Attah-Boakye at Sydney Smith School as he taught a group of 13 to 14 year olds.

She had stormed into the maths lesson after her daughter falsely claimed she had been assaulted by the teacher, Beverley Magistrates Court heard.

Ms Carney, 48, of Ampleforth Grove, west Hull, pleaded guilty to common assault and causing a nuisance or disturbance on school premises.

Mr Attah-Boakye – who was left with blurred vision and an aching jaw – said the attack had made him reconsider his profession.

Heather Levett, prosecuting, said: "He says he loves his job very much but finds himself questioning whether he wants to be a teacher anymore."

The court was told on the morning of March 18, Ms Carney's daughter Melissa had entered Mr Attah-Boakye's class to see a friend five minutes before the lesson had ended. The teacher asked her to wait outside, which she did.

He was "shocked" to learn from the headteacher at lunchtime that the girl had made a complaint and accused him of pushing her, saying it was "a total fabrication of the truth".

At 1.50pm, Mr Attah-Boakye was teaching when Ms Carney, who does not have custody of her daughter, slapped him.

Tim Bishop, defending, said: "There was clearly a trigger that's brought a 48-year-old lady of previous good character to court.

"She accepted her daughter's version of events. She totally regrets her actions."

Ms Carney was given a 12-month community order and ordered to carry out 120 hours of unpaid work.

A supervision requirement was made and she must complete a course in anger management and thinking skills. She must pay 40 in court costs out of her benefits.

When approached by the Mail, Ms Carney did not wish to speak.

Nobody from Sydney Smith School was available for comment.
