Course will teach teenagers about dangers of bad driving

Teenagers are being offered a course to prepare them for learning to drive.

The county council sessions will give 16 and 17-year-olds a chance to get behind the wheel at Mallory Park, Kirkby Mallory.

The day-long events will provide an insight into the risks of drink driving and of using a mobile phone at the wheel.

Participants will have a chance to test their reactions while wearing beer goggles, which mimic the effects of alcohol. They will also be able to get to grips with different speeds, try out slalom sets, learn what is under the bonnet and get advice about hazards.

Councillor Lesley Pendleton, the county council's spokeswoman for environment and transport, said: "By preparing young people for driving, we aim to boost their skills and influence behaviour before bad habits develop.

"Research shows that in Leicestershire, young people account for 12 per cent of licence holders but are involved in 28 per cent of collisions. This is an extremely popular course so I would urge any teenagers who are interested to book a place as soon as they can."

The courses cost 35.

They take place on Tuesday, May 31, Tuesday, July 19, Tuesday, July 26, Tuesday, August 9, Monday, August 22, Tuesday, August 30 and Tuesday, October 18.

There are 42 places on each day.
