Get checked for stroke risk

People will have the chance to check their blood pressure next week and find out more about how to avoid having a stroke.

The Stroke Association is holding a "know your blood pressure" event at Highcross shopping centre, in Leicester, from 9am to 3.30pm on Thursday, May 12.

High blood pressure is the single biggest cause of stroke and affects 39 per cent of men and 31 per cent of women.

It is treatable with medication and by making lifestyle changes.

Maria DeGiorgio, the Stroke Association's regional information officer, said: "Thousands of people are unaware of their blood pressure levels and a lot of people we test are shocked to hear their blood pressure is high.

"We will be handing out information to raise awareness."
