Ordeal as teenager is mugged by gang of eight

A gang of eight men followed and robbed a teenager as he walked through Leicester city centre.

The victim, who is 19, was targeted at 6pm on Friday as he walked between Cheapside and St Martin's Square.

As he neared St Martin's Square a member of the gang, who he had seen a minute earlier, grabbed his bag and pushed him against a wall.

One of the men hit the victim across the face and asked him what belongings he had with him.

The victim handed over his iPhone and the group fled towards Hotel Street.

Pc Aimee Farmer, the investigating officer, said: "The whole ordeal was very frightening for the victim.

"At that time in the evening on a Friday, Leicester can start to get very busy. Bars and pubs are open, people will be in the area leaving or arriving at work and some people may have arrived after for late night shopping.

"All of this increases the chances of someone spotting the incident or seeing the group in the area."

All of the men in the gang are black. One was described by the victim as being about 5ft 8ins, chubby and aged between 20 and 23. He was dressed in black.

Another two members of the group are 19 or 20. They were also dressed in black.

A fourth is slim and 5ft 9ins. He wore a black bandana with a silver swirl pattern.
