A piece of history for Queen's jubilee

A HULL chess-making firm has unveiled the only official commemorative set to mark the Queen's Diamond Jubilee next year.

Studio Anne Carlton, based in Goulton Street, west Hull, has produced the set following a licence agreement with St George's Chapel at Windsor and the Lord Chamberlain's office.

Each piece is individually sculpted in England and marked with the Queen's Cypher.

They include the Queen and Duke of Edinburgh in their Garter Ceremony robes.

The bishop is the Dean of Windsor, the Rt Rev David Conner and the rook is the Round Tower at Windsor Castle.

The knight is based on the Military Knights of Windsor and the pawns are represented as choristers.

A series of events are to be hosted nationwide for the Diamond Jubilee, marking 60 years of the Queen's reign.

Studio Anne Carlton's chess set will be one of the many commemorative items produced for the event.

Michael Lee, managing director of Studio Anne Carlton, said he was proud the company had been chosen.

He said: "It is welcome recognition of the quality of our work over more than four decades of producing chess sets that commemorate great events from British history."

Full-scale production will soon start and they go on sale from October 1.

The full painted set will cost 200 while an "undecorated" set will go for 100.

Studio Anne Carlton will offer the individual pieces of the Queen and Duke of Edinburgh as collectibles for 20 each.

Mr Lee said: "Over the years, the standard Royal commemorative products have been pretty much the same – two dimensional items like bone china plates decorated with a transfer.

"Three-dimensional products are more of a rarity and, to the best of my knowledge, this is the first time anyone has produced a commemorative product depicting members of the Royal family as chess pieces."

Studio Anne Carlton has been producing traditional games and chess sets since 1969.

Other sets made by the company are based on the Tower of London under license from Historic Royal Palaces and a set to mark the 200th anniversary of the Battle Of Trafalgar licensed by the National Maritime Museum.

Mr Lee said: "Without any doubt, this must be the most exciting project I have been involved with throughout my career. It has the potential to transform the company."
