Former mayor had passion for politics

A former Mayor of Melton has died, aged 92.

Gerald York-Childs Green, was a past chairman of the former Melton Urban District Council, twice Mayor of Melton and council leader from 1974 to 1990.

He was given the honorary title of Alderman by the council in 1991, in recognition of his dedicated service to the community.

His son, Hadyn Green, said: "My dad's passion was local politics. Public service was his calling and he was well respected.

"He was always someone to look up to, he was a grafter and worked hard for his cause."

Mr Green was influential in establishing Melton Country Park and was actively involved in the twinning of Melton with Kappelle, in Holland.

He also served on Leicestershire County Council and Leicestershire Area Health Authority and was a governor of two Melton schools.

He was head teacher at Stathern Primary School and at Queniborough School, where he stayed until retirement.

He had a long association with Melton Rugby Club and was a selector on the Leicestershire Rugby Football Union.

He also served in the Royal Leicestershire Regiment and the Royal Electrical and Mechanical Engineers during the Second World War.

His wife, Joan, to whom he was married for 69 years, died two years ago,

Mr Green, who died on April 27, is survived by daughters, Cynthia and Berni, son Hadyn, six grandchildren and nine great-grandchildren.

A thanksgiving funeral service will be held at St Mary's Church, Melton, at 2pm on Thursday.

Donations will be invited for the Derbyshire, Leicestershire and Rutland Air Ambulance.
