Warning of congestion fear on big sports day in Leicester

Roads are expected to be badly congested on Saturday when football and rugby games add to the usual volume of traffic.

About 48,000 people are expected for the Leicester City Football Club and Leicester Tigers events.

The clubs have issued a joint warning with the police advising people to expect travelling and parking to take longer than usual on that date.

Leicester City Council and the police will deploy extra staff to try to minimise the disruption, which is expected to peak between 2pm and 3.30pm.

Each game is the final league match for the two teams, meaning that the dates and kick-off times – 12.45pm for the football and 3pm for the rugby – could not be altered.

Leicester City will be playing against Ipswich and the Tigers will be taking on London Irish.

Sarah Harrison, the city centre director, said: "Shoppers and sports fans might want to consider arriving earlier than usual to avoid the congestion, and making it a proper day out by having lunch in the city before going on to the shops or sports grounds."
