A DENTIST whose family practice was used by thousands across the city has died.
Derek Cowley, who was described as living a "very independent life" died after a short spell in Castle Hill Hospital.
Mr Cowley, 86, had been living in Cherry Burton when he passed away, but was probably best known to Hull residents as one of the Cowley dentist brothers.
The family had run The Cowley Brothers dentistry surgery in Spring Bank, just a few yards away from where the Mail offices now stand.
It is estimated the surgery, which was open from the 1950s to the 1970s, treated about 30,000 Hull residents – ten per cent of the population at the time.
In the late 1970s, Mr Cowley continued to practice both with the NHS and privately until he retired on his 60th birthday.
Mr Cowley's son Peter, 55, said: "About 130 people came to his funeral at Haltemprice Crematorium, which I think shows he was a very popular man. He was a great guy, full of life, and he loved to travel."
Mr Cowley had travelled all over the world in his twilight years, despite having cancer in multiple organs and having suffered two strokes.
In the 18 months before his death, he had been to Australia, Turkey, Egypt and Moscow.
Peter, who lives with his family in Cambridge, said: "My wife and I took him to Moscow in July last year for a long weekend. It turned out to be the hottest temperatures they had ever had and it was really smoggy, it made the news. But he still managed.
"He was a keen traveller and wanted to see all the sights."
Mr Cowley was married to his wife Helen for almost 60 years. She died in 2008.
It was after this that Mr Cowley took up gliding at the age of 85, a hobby he had not indulged in since he was in his twenties.
He would often be found in a glider at Wolds Flying Club at Pocklington.
He leaves behind his son Peter, his daughter Sue and grandchildren Matt and Alan.
Peter said: "We would like to thank all the thousands of Hull and East Yorkshire people who my father knew in his long career and retirement."
