A man has been knocked unconscious in a suspected homophobic attack in Market Weighton.
The 45-year-old man was approached by the gang, who shouted homophobic abuse before assaulting him, leaving him with cuts and bruises. The incident is being treated as a homophobic crime because of the nature of the verbal abuse.
Investigators are studying CCTV footage to track the gang's movements after the attack.
The attack happened close to the Carpenters Arms and Market Weighton Tesco in Southgate on Sunday just after 10.30pm.
Sergeant Peter Rogers of Pocklington and Wolds Weighton Safer Neighbourhood Policing Team said he hoped someone heading home after a night out might have witnessed the attack and could provide crucial information.
He said: "This is a particularly unpleasant and vicious attack which could have had far more serious consequences for the victim.
"For an area like Market Weighton, this was a very unusual incident."
Anybody who has any information should call investigating officer Graham Forsdyke at Pocklington on 0845 6060 222 or Crimestoppers on 0800 555111.
