Reckless youths risk disaster by running across railway track

Police are warning about the dangers of level crossings after two youths risked their lives by running across the railway track at Narborough.

They were caught on camera sprinting across the line as the barriers were coming down and the red warning lights were flashing.

The incident happened on the Leicester to Birmingham line near Narborough station at 4pm on Thursday.

Sergeant Karen Barker, of British Transport Police, based at Leicester station, said: "This type of behaviour not only puts pedestrians' own lives at risk, but also puts trains in danger as they pass through, potentially causing a derailment."

Richard Pedley, Network Rail community safety manager for the East Midlands, said: "This picture is very worrying. The lights at barriers at this crossing are there to keep people safe and there is no excuse for ignoring them in this way."

The crossing near Narborough station is one of the region's worst for people running stop signals.

Network Rail said there were 49 incidents of level crossing "misuse" – when someone fails to stop – in Leicestershire and Rutland last year. Of those, 14 were at the Narborough crossing.

Officers are appealing for anyone who may recognise the youths to contact British Transport Police on 0800 40 50 40.
