Friday's Tampa Bay Rays workouts appeared relatively uneventful, as the pitchers continued working on fundamentals and the position players hit on a separate field.
The biggest news was the status of RHP Jeremy Hellickson, who was kept off the field today with what the Rays are calling a "mild strain" of his right hamstring. He could - and likely will - miss his scheduled Saturday bullpen session, but manager Joe Maddon said there was no reason for concern "at this time.''
RHP Juan Cruz remains delayed by visa issues in his native Dominican Republic but could arrive this weekend. The only other players who have not reported yet are OF/INF Ben Zobrist, INF Elliot Johnson and non-roster INFs Ray Olmedo and Danial Mayora.
Maddon didn't get a chance to talk with Johnny Damon today, but said he is looking forward to doing so and believes he can have a big impact on the team. "He's exactly what we needed,'' Maddon said.
A decision on whether Damon hits leadoff or lower in the lineup likely won't be made until later in the spring as Maddon wants to look at several options during spring games.
