Crisis family in plea to city's Hindu community

An Afghan family facing deportation has travelled to Leicester to thank the city's Hindu community for its support.

Arti Kumar and one of her two sons were in the city on Saturday night at an event organised by the British Hindu Voice to raise awareness of their plight.

Arti and her two sons fled Afghanistan in September 2007 after being targeted by the Taliban.

They claimed asylum in Britain but have now been told they face being deported back to their homeland.

Arti, speaking through an interpreter, said: "It makes us feel happy that people are supporting us.

"Leicester is a good place with a lot of good people.

"It gives us hope that we might be able to live our lives in peace in Britain."

Harish Mandalia, a spokesman for the Leicester-based British Hindu Voice, said the meeting on Saturday was attended by 130 people.

"After Arti told of her struggle, people were visibly moved," he said. "It was not just members of the Hindu community.

"This was response from the people of Leicester.

"She is heartened by this reaction. She is reassured that we will be fighting her corner all the way."

The Kumars say their lives were torn apart when 16-year-old daughter, Rekha, was abducted by Islamic extremists and her kidnappers brutally assaulted Ravi, 21, who was left with brain damage and behavioural difficulties

Arti, 42, who has been living in Middlesbrough with sons Akash, 18, and Ravi, was forced to flee the country leaving her husband behind.

She said she has not heard from her husband or her daughter since.
