Beverley leading East Yorks out of recession, survey finds

SMALL businesses in Beverley are leading an upturn in the region's economy.
Retailers in the vibrant market town are performing better after emerging from the gloom of the last few years.
A survey by the Federation of Small Businesses revealed traders are recording increased profits, taking on more staff and making long-term plans.
Nigel Wilkinson, vice-chairman of FSB East Yorkshire, said: "Beverley is doing very well and some of the other market towns are doing well.
"People there feel they are doing much better than last year.
"We've been looking at a general downward trend over the past five years, but this time there is a definite upturn."
The survey was sent to five thousand businesses across the region.
Companies were asked about their turnover compared with last year and for their assessment of whether business is growing or declining.
They also answered questions about whether they are taking on more staff and if they plan to employ more people in the future.
To make it easy for businesses to respond, they were not asked to quantify their answers with specific numbers. Instead, they were given boxes to tick, ranging from very positive to very negative.
Businesses in Beverley were overwhelmingly positive compared with last year and compared with other places in East Yorkshire.
The overall results showed a slight improvement across Hull and the East Riding, but Beverley's findings were particularly positive.
It is believed the town's loyal customer base is one the main factors.
Mr Wilkinson said: "Hull as a whole seems to be doing about average, compared with the rest of Yorkshire. There has been a very small increase in confidence.
"But Beverley and also Cottingham are doing substantially better than that."
One Beverley retailer on the up is Xen Jewellery Design, in Toll Gavel.
Manager Lizzy Chapman puts the success down to Beverley people shopping locally, rather than heading further afield.
She said: "Beverley seems to be holding its own and I think we've got the people of the town to thank for that because they are a loyal customer base. They like to shop here instead of going somewhere else.
"The business has been here eight years and it's doing well.
"There does seem to be a lot of businesses that have set up in Beverley. We've even got a greengrocer's just opened in Dyer Lane, which is great news.
"If something closes the shops don't stay empty for long."
But it isn't just the small businesses doing well.
York-based Browns department store opened a shop in Beverley selling high-end fashion a year ago.
Boss Nicholas Brown said: "It's been a very successful first year, particularly considering the economic climate. We thought Beverley was a strong town to come to and so it has been.
"The gloss was taken off the year a little by the snow in December, but if we take that out it's been a tremendous success.
"The north belt of Hull are still finding Beverley. But the thing we most like about Beverley is it's got a good core customer base which is very loyal.
"Since we've been there other retailers have come in as well.
"Beverley is bucking the trend across the north of England. It seems to be very healthy.
"It's a vibrant place to come to. It seems to have an effervescence – a drive."
