ALMOST 3.5 million has been saved in the construction of Hull's controversial new police headquarters in Clough Road.
BAM Construction Ltd has been chosen as the preferred contractor for the construction of the new custody suite and operational base.
But all four tenders came in below the amount set aside to build the facility because of competition in the industry sparked by the recession.
BAM will be on site from today, with building set to start in mid-May.
This step marks another milestone in the project, which the Police Authority and Humberside Police have been planning since 2007.
Steve Beasant, vice chairman of Humberside Police Authority, said: "Due to the current financial climate, it is an ideal time to go out to tender for such a project, as the construction industry is competing for fewer contracts.
"As a result, all of the four tenders came in at less than the estimated cost for the construction resulting in the overall cost of the project lowering by almost 3.5 million."
Bids were assessed on potential contractors' taking on local apprentices and encouraging young people.
John Phillips, construction director for BAM in the North East, said: "We recognise the social importance to the local community of delivering these new facilities. For BAM, construction is more than materials – it is about how we build, not just what we build."
Chief Constable Tim Hollis said: "The Clough Road development is an important and welcome investment.
"While the police service is going through a period of austerity, the new building is an indication of our willingness to invest in the future of the city and it will allow us to continue delivering good-quality services for years."
