PLANT CITY — Having knocked off second-seeded Tampa Bay Tech in the Class 5A, District 8 semifinals, tournament host Durant went gunning for No. 1 Riverview in Friday night's district final.

The Cougars stayed close — for three quarters.

Then the Sharks pulled away, scoring the first 11 points of the fourth quarter en route to a lopsided 30-11 scoring advantage for that frame. It added up to a 77-56 Riverview win of historic proportions.

"That's the first district championship we've ever had at Riverview and I couldn't be happier," said Riverview coach Lelani Gordon, who last month notched her 400th career win.

Faith Woodard scored a game-high 34 to lead the Sharks, none more important than the six she had in that 11-0 run that helped her team go from a 47-45 lead at the end of the third quarter to 58-45.

"She's one of the best sophomores — one of the best players — I've ever had," Gordon said of Woodard, a forward.

Woodard had plenty of help in the Sharks' fast-break attack. Teammates Monet Williams and Ashley Favors scored 15 and 13 points.

The Cougars did not go down without a fight. They rallied from an 11-point deficit in the third quarter to pull within two by the end of that frame.

Pacing Durant's offense was Taylor Broadnax, who finished with 30 points, including three 3-pointers.

Durant did not have another player in double figures.
