Lucky escape for pensioner as learner driver crashes into his lounge

IT'S not the best way to end a driving lesson.

This is the scene of devastation after a learner driver crashed into a house in an East Riding village.

The impact on the house in Main Street, Keyingham, brought parts of the wall down along with a radiator, bursting a water pipe.

A 25-year-old man was driving a silver Ford Focus which hit the house as he drove in the direction of Hull to Withernsea, with a 23-year-old female passenger.

The homeowner, who asked not be named, said he would normally have been sitting in the front room when the crash happened on Tuesday at 1.45pm.

The pensioner said: "I would usually be in the living room watching some trash on TV and sipping a cup of tea, but I'd just nipped upstairs at the time.

"I wouldn't say I feel lucky – a car has come through my house – but I feel fortunate to be alive.

"I've lived in the village for more than 20 years and it's not something you see every day.

"I've lived through the blitz so I'm made of tough stuff.

"But it was only afterwards I thought about what could have happened to me and it does shake you up."

The police, ambulance and fire brigade were called to the scene after the car bounced off the house and stopped in the middle of the road.

Emergency services closed the road for around three hours to prevent any further accidents with traffic driving round the nearby bend.

The driver and passenger were checked over by paramedics but had not suffered any injuries.

Fire crew made sure the house was safe by erecting structural support, and disconnected the car battery, before the car was taken away by a recovery firm.

An engineer from East Riding Council also attended the house. Temporary traffic signals to restrict the road to one-lane have been put in place and the house has been cordoned off to protect the public.

The homeowner – who has a pile of rubble in his living room and a huge crack across the wall – said he is fully insured.

A Humberside Police spokesperson said: "Police received a call from a member of the public at 1.42pm on February 2 reporting a collision on the A1033, Main Street, Keyingham.

"There have been no arrests in connection with the collision."

Police confirmed that the driver was being supervised by an "appropriate passenger", that is a full licence holder over 21 years old with more than plus years' driving experience.
