Academies is the hot topic at school talks

County education bosses are holding a series of meetings this week to discuss the future of schools in Leicestershire.

The meetings are being held so the county council can gather head teachers' views on converting to academies.

It follows the Government's announcement in November's Education White Paper that the academies programme would be extended.

All primary and secondary schools can apply to become academies.

So far, only one Leicestershire school – Manor High in Oadby – is considering conversion.

Gareth Williams, the county's director for children and young people, said: "We want to talk through what's best for our children and make sure our outstanding and good schools remain that way.

"We're not being pushed by the Department for Education but we want to plan for the future and make sure we're in charge of our own destiny.

"We're one of the most successful authorities when it comes to schools and we know there's been little interest in conversion to academy status so far."

Chris Robinson, head of John Ferneley College, in Melton, said: "We've registered an interest in conversion but that doesn't mean we'll pursue it.

"It's crucial we consult and make an informed decision that's to the benefit of students, rather than a decision based on party politics."

Christine Horsfall, head of Burleigh Community College, in Loughborough, said: "The White Paper has opened up a number of areas for debate and that's what we're here to do as education leaders."
