Wrestling: Largo takes down Dunedin at Falcon Duals

DUNEDIN — Largo and Dunedin have had a friendly wrestling rivalry going all season.

Dunedin, the county powerhouse, won an earlier dual meet this season and had suffered injuries to several of its top wrestlers recently. Youthful Largo, meanwhile, is oozing confidence, hoping this is the year it claims the Pinellas County Athletic Championship in two weeks.

But first came Saturday's Falcon Duals.

The Packers emerged from pool matches undefeated and then topped the host Falcons 48-24 in the final.

"(Dunedin) had some kids out of their lineup today, and we capitalized," Largo coach Jeremy Frioud said after the event, which featured two injuries requiring hospital visits. "We have hard workers from hard-working families. … We go out, bust our butts and do our job. Every kid did their job, and that's why we took first place."

Largo defeated Wiregrass Ranch 50-17, Bradenton Manatee 50-30, South Fort Myers 46-28 and Palm Harbor 43-31. The Packers had three wrestlers go 5-0: Josh Jeffries (145 pounds) Chris Johnson (171) and David Vogheny (189).

Palm Harbor's Nick Vios dislocated his knee in his 145-pound bout against Dunedin's Austin Prince. Vios was taken to Mease Dunedin Hospital, as was Dunedin's Chandler Pope (125 pounds), whose elbow was dislocated. Both wrestlers had the bones popped back into place and were released, according to Dunedin coach Marc Allison.

"There was some high intensity wrestling going on, and when you have that there is a potential for injuries," Allison said. "I feel really bad for the kid from Palm Harbor."

Dunedin (4-1) was followed by Citrus (3-2), Palm Harbor U. (2-3), Manatee (2-3), South Fort Myers (2-3), Harmony (1-4) and Wiregrass Ranch (0-5).

Marauders Duals: Bradenton's Lakewood Ranch went 5-0, including a 59-15 win over host Clearwater Central Catholic, to win the event for the second straight year. CCC went 4-1, and was followed by Tampa Prep (3-2), Pinellas Park (2-3), Anclote (1-4) and Berkeley Prep (0-5).
