The Rays have nothing to lose. After bidding adieu to leftfielder Carl Crawford, first baseman Carlos Peña, starter Matt Garza and 75 percent of its bullpen, Tampa Bay needed to roll the dice. Signing Johnny Damon and Manny Ramirez at this stage of their careers is about as risky as it gets, but who knows — maybe the Idiots have a little something left.

HBO's Real Sports With Bryan Gumbel debuts a new episode at 10 p.m. Tuesday, and one of the features is on the poor money management of NFL players and how many end up broke or nearly broke when they finish their playing careers. Former Bucs player Chidi Ahanotu is one of the players in the feature. The segment, "Short-Changed," is reported by Frank Deford.
Rumor of the day
Last week, Yankees GM Brian Cashman publicly questioned his team spending $35 million to sign reliever Rafael Soriano. Now, New York Daily News columnist Bill Madden is suggesting Cashman might leave when his contract runs out after this season. Madden wrote he wouldn't be surprised if Cashman seeks out a small-market team where he will have free reign.
