Man jailed after attack on girlfriend

A man who attacked his partner, cut her with a knife and trashed her flat has been jailed for 15 months.

Joseph Thomas admitted causing his then girlfriend actual bodily harm during a row at her home in Cropthorne Avenue, Crown Hills, Leicester.

The 41-year-old also pleaded guilty to two counts of causing damage, including breaking a door and smashing windows.

Thomas, of Mere Road, Spinney Hill, Leicester, originally denied holding a knife while assaulting the victim. But after hearing evidence, Recorder William Harbage QC ruled that a knife caused a cut to the victim's left buttock – although it was not a deliberate stabbing but happened as the victim moved when she tried to leave the room.

The complainant told the Recorder she was "battered" by the defendant, who punched her a number of times. She also suffered multiple scratches and abrasions to her face and body.

The assault happened on March 13 last year.

Sentencing, Recorder Harbage said: "It was an unpleasant incident and an unprovoked attack.

"As you said in your interview, you 'totally lost it'.

"You accepted, when I heard evidence from you, that you were in a temper and angry – and you admitted assaulting her and smashing the flat up.

"It's not the first time this has happened."

In mitigation, the court heard that Thomas had since obeyed stringent bail conditions without further problems.
