LITHIA — Nationally-ranked Newsome needed just 45 minutes to dispatch Plant City on Friday, defeating the Raiders by the 8-0 mercy rule to capture the Class 5A-8 district title.

"We're taking this thing one game at a time right now," said Newsome coach Kelly Townsend, whose team will host Ocala Forest in Thursday's region quarterfinal.

"We played solid but there are some things we need to tweak before next week."

The win marked the third straight district crown for Newsome (21-0-0), ranked No. 9 in the country in the most recent ESPN RISE poll. Plant City (14-5-1), which travels to Springstead on Thursday, will be making just the second playoff appearance in school history.

"This one stings but we'll be ready (for Thursday)," Plant City coach Justin Throneburg said. "I think the team was a little emotionally spent after (the district semifinal win against East Bay)."

Newsome built a 7-0 lead at the break and Taylor Decaire finished off the Raiders with a right-side run five minutes into the second half. Shea Rhoney and Caroline Evers each had a pair of goals while four Wolves scored once.

"That's the thing, there's no individual to focus on and you can't man mark all 11," Townsend said.

"And if you do, I have 11 more for you."
