In Brief

Crash barriers work to improve student safety

EAST YORKS: Work on the installation of crash barriers along the A63 is set to begin on Monday, February 14.

The project, by the Highways Agency, will help protect students of South Hunsley School, who walk feet away from traffic travelling at 70mph, on their way from Welton and Brough.

The work, which will take two weeks, will be carried out during evening and nighttime periods.

There are also talks between East Riding Council and Sport England to allow the diversion of the footpath on to the school field.

East Riding Councillor Helen Gilmour said: "We hope that all of the works will be complete in this financial year so that students will have the benefit of the safer route to school in the coming summer months and beyond."

BRIDLINGTON: Richard Myerscough has spoken about the types of stones used to build churches in the Yorkshire Wolds.

It took place at the latest meeting of the Bridlington And District Civic Society.

Mr Myerscough showed slides of churches describing the types of stone they were built of and where it came from.

Flint stone and chalk were used, Flamborough Chalk being among the toughest.

The group's next meeting is on Tuesday, February 8, at Bridlington North Library at 2.30pm. John Walker will speak on Flamborough Light Railway.

EAST RIDING: Work has started on the next phase of a 1 million maintenance scheme to the A614, between Ruston Parva and Carnaby.

The five-week project, on the section from Carnaby to Burton Agnes, includes deep structural repairs prior to the laying of a new road surface.

The majority of work will take place from Monday to Friday, from 6pm to 6am.

However, daytime working might be required to avoid freezing temperatures if they arise.

If this does happen, it will be restricted to 9am starts, Monday to Friday.

HEDON: The Hedon And District Royal British Legion Club is looking for a new secretary who will be responsible to the club committee.

Literacy is essential, along with knowledge of book-keeping and cash handling.

Suitable candidates must be honest, hard working, reliable and flexible. The position is unpaid.

For more information, contact the club chairman, Andrew Walker, at Hedon Royal British Legion Club, 4 Magdalen Gate, Hedon, HU12 8JP. Call 01482 897588 for mode details.

The deadline for applications is Monday, February 14.

EAST RIDING: Young people who have spent the past 44 weeks volunteering in the local authority children's services, are graduating next month.

Called vTalent Year, the project is in its second year in the East Riding.

The scheme, funded by V, the national youth volunteers' service, offers people aged 16 to 25, the opportunity to volunteer for 30 hours a week in roles such as youth centres and libraries.

All the volunteers are in the process of completing a relevant level two qualification, for example in youth work or supporting teaching and learning in schools.

The second year cohort will be graduating on Thursday, February 3, at Tickton Grange Hotel.

EAST YORKS: Dove House Hospice, a charity caring for people with life-limiting illnesses in Hull and the East Riding, is appealing for new volunteers to help in the running of its warehouse and distribution centre.

The purpose-built warehouse and distribution centre, which opened six years ago at Sutton Fields Industrial Estate, houses the majority of stock for Dove House's chain of 31 charity shops.
