A carpet-fitter has been jailed for six years after he was caught attempting to smuggle drugs worth an estimated 150,000 into the UK.
Vinod Allen (30), of Tournament Road, Glenfield, was jailed at Canterbury Crown Court yesterday after he pleaded guilty to attempting to smuggle seven packages of heroin and cocaine.
Allen was arrested by UK Border Agency officers when he arrived at Dover in March last year.
Officers discovered the seven packages hidden underneath the passenger seat in his Mercedes van. When questioned, Allen told officials he had been to Belgium to collect carpets.
Six of the packages contained a total of 3kg of heroin, with an estimated street value of 140,000.
A seventh package contained 250g of cocaine, which could have sold for up to 10,000.
Malcolm Bragg, the UK Border Agency's criminal and financial assistant director in the south, said: "This is a strong warning to anyone who believes drug smuggling is acceptable.
"Clearly, the view of the courts is that it is a very serious matter and UK Border Agency officers will remain vigilant at all our ports and airports to prevent drugs reaching our streets."
Allen had pleaded guilty to the offence of being knowingly concerned in the fraudulent evasion of the prohibition of controlled drugs at a previous hearing in December.
