FAVRE TOTALLY, FINALLY, REALLY DONE (WE THINK)

Brett Favre says it's time to call it a career.

Favre, 41, said he was finished after sitting out Minnesota's season-ending loss to Detroit with a concussion. He missed three of his final four games because of injury after starting an NFL record 297 straight games.

"It's been a wonderful experience for me," Favre said. "This year did not work out the way we would have hoped, but that's football."

He acknowledged that some will doubt he is truly done after he came back from two other retirements.

"It's time. I'm okay with it," he said. "In my opinion, it's never easy for any player. People, they'll say 'wait and see,' but that's okay."

His slew of passing records includes yards (71,838), TDs (508), attempts (10,169) completions (6,300) and interceptions (336). But this season was marred by poor performance on the field — and, off the field, a $50,000 fine for sending inappropriate texts to Tampa's Jenn Sterger in 2008.

Coaches await fate

• Dolphins spokesman Harvey Greene said any decisions would be made by owner Stephen Ross, who did not travel to New England to see coach Tony Sparano's team lose 38-7 to the Patriots.

Eric Mangini is scheduled to meet today with Browns team president Mike Holmgren amid reports that Holmgren will take over as coach.

• Cowboys owner Jerry Jones said he expects to decide within days if he'll remove the interim tag from Jason Garrett. He may have tipped his hand after Sunday's win when he was asked if the new coach would have input into hiring the rest of the staff. "That is certainly something that Jason needs to have input in," Jones said.

• ESPN reported that Tom Cable is "unlikely to return" to the Raiders. The Contra Costa (Calif.) Times reported that Cable is slated to meet with owner Al Davis in a few days.

• Vikings owner Zygi Wilf wouldn't discuss interim coach Leslie Frazier's future. Frazier said he planned to talk with ownership Sunday night or today.

• Giants co-owner John Mara said there was "never any doubt'' in announcing that Tom Coughlin will return next season.

• Bengals coach Marvin Lewis will discuss his status today with owner Mike Brown. "All I know is, officially today I'm no longer employed," Lewis said.

• Texans coach Gary Kubiak is meeting with owner Bob McNair today amid reports that be could go, or could stay after firing several defensive assistants.

BRONCOS: AP reported that Hall of Famer John Elway is expected to rejoin the team as chief football executive by midweek.

COLTS: QB Peyton Manning broke the record for consecutive starts to begin a career with his 208th, surpassing former Raiders OL Gene Upshaw.
