Sketchbook: Landscape evokes a forgotten age

The fascinating variety of peaceful landscapes to be found amongst the rolling hills of eastern Leicestershire is, to me, a constant delight.

I find the relative ease with which one may come across quiet roads and pretty lanes greatly increases in the joy of travelling through it.

One of my favourite stretches of road runs up hill and down dale from Tilton-on-the-Hill to the delightful Oakham, which is the capital of Rutland, England's smallest county, only about 17 miles across in any direction.

It gives me immense pleasure to travel through rich agricultural land, with its rolling hills, gently sloping valley sides, and damp valley bottoms, almost always with a stream in them.

The whole landscape creates an air of softness and mystery that speaks of a land forgotten by our modern industrial age.

On a recent new year's visit to Oakham, I came across what seemed to be a perfect seasonal snow scene in the icy grip of winter.

Then and there, out came my sketchbook and I set about to draw happily.

Shown here is the result –the shape and setting seemed to make a cheerful and evocative scene.
