EAST YORKS: People are being urged to support a major cancer charity in its centenary year.

Macmillan Cancer Support wants people to make 2011 a bumper fundraising year to celebrate the milestone.

Sally Millington, from Macmillan, said people could help to support the work of their nurses in many ways.

"We need support to provide our vital services and people can sign up for our fundraising events or organise their own," she said.

The charity was started in 1911 by Douglas Macmillan, who had watched his father die of cancer and did not want others to endure the same pain.
