The Rays have signed outfielder Chris Carter to a minor-league deal.

Carter, a left-handed hitter who has played LF, RF and DH in the big-leagues, batted .263 with four homers and 24 RBI in 100 games for the Mets last season.

Carter, 28, had been acquired by New York from the Red Sox in a trade for Billy Wagner in August 2009. Carter was non-tendered by the Mets this offseason.

The former University of Stanford standout apparently earned the nickname "Animal" from Mets manager Jerry Manuel for his relentless work ethic and intensity. In his first at-bat with the Mets in May, Carter hit a double in the eighth to knock in go-ahead run in a win over the Nationals.

Adam Rubin of ESPN New York was the first to report this deal this morning.
