Class 4A, district 9

Blake has hot second half, will face Jesuit

TAMPA — Blake overcame some stingy first-half defense by Robinson to win its Class 4A, District 9 playoff game 58-38 Friday night at home.

The Yellow Jackets were held to 19 first-half points before opening up the game in the half court and in transition in the second half.

Robinson (16-9) was aggressive on defense but had a tough time finding the bottom of the net.

"I give them credit, they played us tough in the first half," Blake coach Winston Davis said. "We were settling for too many long shots and attacked them more in the second half. That helped to open up the game for us."

Andre Davis kept the Yellow Jackets (24-2) in the game in the first half with four big 3-pointers and led the team with 18 points. The point guard had only four second-half points however, as he got the rest of his team involved. Brandon Channer scored 11 of his 14 in the second half for Blake and Clarence Peterson had eight of his 10 in the second.

Robinson was led by Tre Leonard, who scored a game-high 20. Despite being tied at 19 at half, the Knights missed several short-range shots in the third quarter and had to resort to 3s to get back into the game in the fourth. Blake outscored Robinson by nine in the third and 20-9 in the fourth.

Sharp-shooting Jesuit needed to make only one 3-pointer against Spoto. The Tigers went inside early and often to center Zak Bradley, who led all scorers with 18 as Jesuit cruised 55-34. The Tigers (23-3) will play Blake, which will be looking for its second straight district title.
