Keswick, Canterbury can't keep pace
ST. PETERSBURG — Cambridge Christian and Carrollwood Day will square off tonight for the A-9 district title. The Patriots escaped with a 47-45 victory over the Lancers earlier this year.
They earned the right to play for the title with relatively easy victories Friday. In the first game of the night's doubleheader, the Lancers (18-6) relied on the considerable height of Cameron Brown to cruise past host Keswick Christian 81-61.
Brown scored 29, 21 of which came in the second half from close range. His effort was equaled by Keswick's Tanner Wozniak, whose 29 points included eight 3-pointers. His 3-point shot to open the third quarter brought the Crusaders (10-17) to within 11, but that's as close as they would get.
In the nightcap, Carrollwood Day routed Canterbury 51-31. Much like the team they'll face tonight, the Patriots relied on a formidable inside presence to control the game. Mak Djulbegovic and Adonis Welch used their size to dominate the boards and haul in rebounds on both ends of the court.
Carrollwood Day (15-7) had the game well in hand by halftime, having built a 26-10 lead. A 7-0 run by Canterbury (9-12) cut the lead to 11, but the Patriots responded with a run that put the team up by 20. They were led by Matt Phillips' 18 points.
James Goodwin led Canterbury with 13. He was the only Crusader in double figures.
In the season's earlier matchup between the Patriots and Lancers, Brown was held to nine points but had eight rebounds.
