There won't be a Rose Bowl rematch to open next season.

Texas Christian confirmed Thursday that it turned down a chance to play at Wisconsin because there would not be a rematch in Fort Worth.

ESPN.com reported UNLV wants to get out of its scheduled game at Wisconsin. That led to an unidentified third party contacting Wisconsin and TCU about a matchup eight months after the Horned Frogs beat the Badgers 21-19 in Pasadena.

Wisconsin coach Bret Bielema said he favored the game.

"It was something that was going to be broadcast and made a big deal," he said. "It took me all of about point-five seconds to say yes. … Unfortunately, TCU wasn't as excited about the matchup."

That's because the Horned Frogs wanted a home-and-home series. Athletic director Chris Del Conte said: "I have no interest in playing a (one-time) game."

Another gator to Temple? Scot Loeffler, Florida's quarterbacks coach the past two seasons, will be named offensive coordinator, the Philadelphia Daily News reported. He would be the sixth former Gator hired by new coach and former UF offensive coordinator Steve Addazio.

Maryland: Randy Shannon, fired as Miami coach in November, was offered the defensive coordinator job and likely will take it, the Baltimore Sun reported.

Mississippi: Quarterback Randall Mackey, among the candidates to start in the fall, had surgery to remove cartilage from his left knee. His status for spring practice hasn't been determined.

Obituary: Emory Bellard, a former Texas A&M and Mississippi State coach credited with developing the wishbone offense while an assistant at Texas, died of Lou Gehrig's disease in Georgetown, Texas. He was 83. In the offseason before the 1968 season, Mr. Bellard worked on using all of Texas' standout running backs. His idea was to put one a yard behind the quarterback, flanked by two more a few yards behind to form what looked like a "Y." Quarterbacks had three options: hand off to the fullback, keep the ball or pitch to one of the other running backs. The Longhorns won a national title in 1969, and Oklahoma used the wishbone to become nearly unstoppable in the 1970s and 1980s.

Rules changes? The NCAA's football rules committee proposed changes, including adopting a 10-second runoff for clock-stopping penalties in the final minute of each half, moving the umpire behind the running backs, and having tighter restrictions on blocks below the waist. It may also eliminate having three defensive players line up against one offensive lineman on placekicks. A vote on the proposals is expected April 14.

Baseball: Cal's decision on dropping the program — along with men's and women's gymnastics and women's lacrosse — was delayed indefinitely. The school is reconsidering after former Cal and major-league pitcher Doug Nickle said "Save Cal Sports" has raised about $15 million for the programs.
