Fire service faces further cuts over scrapped 999 'super centre'

Firefighters in the region could face further funding cutbacks unless a use for a shelved 999 'super centre' is found.

Four control rooms in Hessle were to be closed and replaced with a super centre in Wakefield, West Yorkshire, after the previous Government decided to streamline England's 46 local control rooms to improve response to major disasters.

But now the Government – having scrapped the scheme – has warned costs of running the Wakefield site mean less cash will be available – unless the building is used by the fire service or an alternative tenant.
