LAKELAND — Despite turning the ball over 39 times, Lakeland Christian defeated Brooks-DeBartolo 48-45 in a Class 2A region quarterfinal Thursday.
Brooks-DeBartolo had a chance to tie with five seconds left but a jumper by Vintoria Hopps hit the left side of the rim as the buzzer sounded.
The Phoenix (19-17) had no answer for 6-foot-1 Christin Strawbridge, who had 31 points and 11 rebounds, including all nine of the Vikings' (15-10) points in the third quarter.
"Our goal was to get (Brooks-DeBartolo) in foul trouble tonight," Vikings coach Tim Strawbridge said. "I wanted the girls to grow in discipline, passion and intensity this year and I felt like they have done that." Two players fouled out for the Phoenix.
"The big girl (Strawbridge) killed us tonight," Phoenix coach Dexter Bryant said.
