A survey asking whether a sports complex should be built on a nature reserve has found two-thirds of voters support the idea.
In an online poll posted by mayoral hopeful Ross Willmott, 324 of 486 people who had voted by 1pm yesterday were in favour of Leicester City Council's plan to build on Aylestone Meadows.
Opponents of the development said the survey was not an accurate representation of public opinion.
Councillor Willmott said he was surprised by the response.
He said: "It's a very interesting response but there is still some time to go.
"It is great so many people are submitting their views."
The plans for the floodlit football pitch, clubhouse and 150-space car park will be discussed by the council at the end of the month.
The proposals are part of an 11 million scheme to increase football provision at a number of sites city-wide.
The project was provisionally given the go-ahead when Ross Willmott was council leader.
He is one of a number of Labour councillors hoping to become the party's candidate for elected mayor. The party will make its choice this month, ahead of an election in May.
Coun Willmott said: "I was asking the question of whether it should be built on Aylestone Meadows, not whether it should be built altogether.
"I hope to see a solution where the facilities can be built but the meadows preserved."
Aylestone Meadows Appreciation Society opposes the plans.
Chairwoman Anne Hayto said: "Any online survey is unreliable – it's fairly meaningless."
The poll has now closed.
