The Tampa Bay Lightning on Wednesday placed goaltender Mike Smith on waivers with the intention of sending him to AHL Norfolk.
Lightning GM Steve Yzerman said the move was two-fold: It will relieve a glut of three goaltenders for Tampa Bay and fill the spot left open by the shoulder injury to goaltender Cedrick Desjardins.
"He needs to play,'' Yzerman said. "Having three goaltenders here, we don't really want to go with any kind of rotation, and with Cedrick being out ... If Smitty gets claimed, it's good for him. If he doesn't, he goes down and plays for us down there. We want to get him playing.''
We will know at noon Thursday whether or not he is claimed.
