Bloomington, Ind. — William Buford scored 24 points and No. 2 Ohio State made 13 of 19 3-pointers, pulling away from Indiana for an 85-67 men’s basketball victory Friday.
The Buckeyes (14-0, 1-0 Big Ten) have won eight straight road games — their longest such streak since winning nine in a row from 1970 through ’72. And for the first time in school history, the Buckeyes have won three consecutive games at Assembly Hall. Ohio State hadn’t won three straight in Bloomington since 1968-70, before the current arena opened.
Ohio State did it with flair, too, shooting 60.5 percent from the field and tied the record for most 3s by an opponent at Assembly Hall. Northwestern made 13 last season in Bloomington.
Christian Watford scored 17 points for Indiana (9-6, 0-2), which has lost four straight and two in a row at home.
Jared Sullinger had 19 points for Ohio State.
The Buckeyes’ shooting was incredible. They started 8-of-11 from the field, finished the first half at 15-of-21 overall and 7-of-10 from 3-point range. And until the closing minutes, they were still shooting nearly 70 percent from the field.
Indiana simply couldn’t keep up.
While the Hoosiers did a respectable job inside, the Buckeyes decided to exploit the perimeter.
Buford and Jon Diebler combined to make four 3-pointers in the first 6 minutes, and when David Lighty made two free throws with 13:55 to go in the half, the Buckeyes led, 22-8.
Indiana closed to 31-22 when Watford made a 3-pointer with 6:09 to go, but Ohio State answered with six straight points and led, 46-33, at halftime.
The Hoosiers had even bigger problems in the second half.
Forward Derek Elston drew his fifth foul with 17:17 to play, less than a minute after forward Tom Pritchard, who starred for St. Edward, was called for his fourth. And when Buford hit his fourth 3 of the game, the Buckeyes led, 50-35.
Still, the pesky Hoosiers fought back. Watford beat the shot clock with a 3 to make it 60-48 with 12:55 to go.
That’s when the Buckeyes answered with a 9-2 run to extend the lead to 69-50.
Indiana made one more charge, going on a 7-0 spurt to close to 75-61 with about 4:52 left, but that was as close as the Hoosiers got.
